How it measures

What Typeloft counts, and how

Typeloft is a typing trainer that runs in your browser. Here is everything it measures, where the keyboard shortcuts come from, and what it keeps.

Speed and accuracy

Words per minute = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. A "word" is five characters, spaces included, which is the usual convention for typing tests, so long and short words count fairly. Only characters you typed correctly count.

Accuracy = correct keys ÷ all keys pressed × 100. Typeloft stops on a mistake: the wrong key is counted and flashed, and the cursor waits until you press the right one.

The clock starts with your first key and stops with the last character (lessons) or at the time limit (tests). A lesson is passed at 90% accuracy or better. The server recomputes every saved number from the counts and refuses results that do not add up, or that are faster than 250 words a minute.

How the lessons are built

Lessons follow the US QWERTY layout, starting from the home row (A S D F, J K L ;) with the index fingers on the F and J bumps. Each lesson adds one or two keys and says which finger takes them. The practice text is drawn fresh each time from Typeloft's own list of common English words, keeping only words made entirely of the keys you have learned; early lessons with too few words use short letter groups instead. Lesson 18 and the sentences test use plain sentences written for Typeloft.

Where the drill keys come from

Each Edit Drill quotes the line it relies on from the maker's own keyboard shortcut page, read on 14 October 2026:

The drill box is an ordinary browser text box, so the result depends on your browser too. Typeloft checks the finished text (runs of spaces are ignored) and counts every key press except a modifier key on its own. Par is the number of keys in the steps shown.

What is kept

Nothing while you practise: the typing runs in your browser. If you press Save, the server keeps what you practised, the counts, the time and how often each key was right or wrong. Never the text you typed. Logs nobody opens for 400 days are deleted. The public pages also carry one banner from AdEngine, WeldonPC's own small ad network (never your Practice Log). Who runs it

Typeloft is run by WeldonPC.com. It is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft, Apple or Google; their product names are used only to say which keys to press on their computers.
