Typing lessons, speed test and editing drills

Type it faster.
Edit it without the mouse.

Typeloft teaches touch typing one key at a time, times you with honest numbers, and drills the editing keys that Windows, Chromebook and Mac already have. It all runs in your browser. No account, no email.

The lesson path

Four units. Eighteen stops. One key at a time.

Each lesson lights the new keys on the keyboard, says which finger takes them, and builds practice text from real words that use only the keys you know. You pass a lesson at 90% accuracy: speed comes once the reaches are right.

All 18 lessons

  1. Home row 12345
  2. Reach up and down 6789
  3. The whole alphabet 1011121314
  4. Shift, numbers and marks 15161718

Honest numbers

Two formulas, printed where you can check them.

Words per minute

correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes

A "word" is five characters, spaces included: the usual typing-test convention. Wrong keys add nothing.

Accuracy

correct keys ÷ all keys pressed

Every key you press counts. The cursor waits on a mistake until you type the right key.

Worked example

200 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 = 40 wpm

200 correct characters in one minute, 210 keys pressed: 200 ÷ 210 = 95.2% accuracy.

Edit Drills

The keys the computer already has.

Every drill names the keys for each computer, quoted from the maker's own shortcut page, then checks your edit by the result and counts how many keys you used.

Questions

Does it work on a phone?

The pages do, and you can type with the phone's keyboard, but Typeloft is made for a real keyboard on a laptop or desktop: that is where touch typing pays off.

Which keyboard layout does it teach?

The US QWERTY layout, the usual layout on computers sold in the United States. Edit Drills work on any layout.

What is saved about me?

Nothing, unless you press Save. A saved result keeps what you practised, the counts, the time and how often each key was right or wrong. Never the text you typed, never your name. Privacy.

How fast should I be?

Typeloft does not grade you against other people. Watch your own number climb, and keep accuracy above 90% while it does.
